During the early 20th century, Holcolm and Hoke manufactured a line of popcorn machines with names such as "The Cashier" and The Moneymaker. The names were to highlight that the poppers would quickly pay for themselves and retire any credit extended by the company.
And, in fact, the company and its salesmen were quite successful in bringing popcorn to the masses while turning a handsome profit and earing the salesman fat commissions. The machines were beautifully made, generally with mahogany cabinets and German silver with models ranging from simpler counter models to complex floor models that marketed both popcorn and roasted peanuts. The popcorn machines were intensely mechanical, looking like a Rube Goldberg device as it moved raw popcorn to a finished product. Offered here is the Cashier, a counter model from the 1920's. The machine has sat untouched (indoors) since then, so it is time to move it on to someone who will share the Holcolm and Hoke mystique. It is in very good condition for a mechanical device around 100 years old. The cabinet is in very good condition, with just a few joints that are loose that can be easily glued. At least some of the glass and decals are likely not original, judging from the excellent condition the decals are in. When connected to power, the lights come on. The hot plate, warmers, and mechanisms have not been tested as the wiring looks quite worn and it was feared that testing it may cause damage.
Note that the previous owner stated that it had been tested, though this can not be confirmed. The globe that holds the unpopped corn is likely not original as the lid does not fit properly.Comparing the globe with what is shown in the owner's manual (a PDF copy will be provided) shows a globe of a slightly different shape. Additional decals will be provided (see pictures above). The item "100 YEAR OLD HOLCOMB AND HOKE POPCORN MACHINE The Cashier" is in sale since Thursday, December 9, 2021.
